Art

The school has a well equipped art room where pupils have an art lesson for one hour per week. Children undertake projects that broaden their experience of a range of media in both two and three dimensions. Traditional skills are taught progressively alongside opportunities for children to develop creative expression. We believe that an appreciation of Art is an important life skill which will enrich our pupils’ lives. An Interactive Whiteboard with Internet access providing large, high quality images is used to teach appreciation of and response to the work of other artists. We also use the beautiful surroundings of the school environment to develop an artistic response to landscape. Two art clubs (one after school, and another at lunchtimes) provides further opportunities for pupils to develop their class-work or explore their own creative ideas. The Art department is regularly involved with community projects, such as the ‘off the Wall’ project on the quay and hosting an inter-school exhibition for Purbeck Art Week. We are proud of the standards Swanage Middle School pupils attain in their art work which is exhibited in the school foyer and on our web site.
